[Top rated] Fast and the Furious 6: What Makes This Film Stand Out from the Rest

Parents need to know that Fast & Furious 6 is the sixth movie in the long-running series that began with 2001's The Fast and the Furious. Like its predecessors, it's focused on car chases, explosions, and objectifying women. There are tons of exploding vehicles and lots of violent fighting, plus some shooting and some death (though very little blood). There are some minor sexual situations, but no actual nudity is shown. Language is somewhat strong, including one "f--k" and several uses of "s--t," "a--hole," and "p---y." Characters are seen drinking Corona beer from time to time. The previous movie, Fast Five, reinvigorated the series and became its biggest hit, so teens are likely to be all fired up for this one -- though it's not as good from a story perspective.

Why is Fast & Furious 6 rated PG-13? The MPAA rated Fast & Furious 6 PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and action and mayhem throughout, some sexuality and language.Run Time: 130 minutes

In the meantime, this script rounds out this cast of fast-driving, law-breakers to make them even more appealing to audiences. A healthy dose of humor, plenty of buddy moments and a new baby all do their part to take the edge off these characters who are living in exotic locations around the globe while enjoying the fruits of their last million dollar heist. The only hitch is they have to stay in countries without extradition laws that would send them back to the US to face charges.

In the end these criminals name their price for their part in preserving the American dream, which in this case seems to be the right to recklessly drive fast cars, steal exorbitant amounts of money and hold the law-abiding public hostage with their demands. And they do it all in the name of family. Any parent, with or without street smarts, will want to steer their children clear of these delinquent drivers.

Not to give away too much of the, uh, plot, but the film involves the latest globetrotting adventure of Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Michelle Rodriguez, The Rock, and their friends. The criminal/cop team go from country to country driving fast cars, having shoot-outs with international thieves, and flipping the middle finger to NATO. Eventually, the villains get their hands on a terrifying tank, resulting in a profoundly over-the-top chase sequence on a crowded highway where cars are pulverized, bodies fly through the air, and innocent civilians bolt for cover. The scene includes polished lines of loud, panicked dialogue such as, SOMEBODY DO SOMETHING, I GOT A TANK ON MY ASS.

The first five films in the series generated $1.59 billion in worldwide ticket sales, according to Box Office Mojo. The sixth installment was expected to generate $107 million over the four-day holiday weekend, the estimate of Boxoffice.com, another researcher.

To the joint credit of director Justin Lin and Universal Pictures, this isn't in 3-D. That's probably because the amount of fast-cutting necessary to piece together the action sequences doesn't lend itself to the format. Fast & Furious 6's stunt work has largely been assembled in post-production, with machine-gun editing and computer-aided special effects accomplishing things that no live human could achieve. As is typical of this approach, it can be difficult figuring out what's going on during segments of the fight and/or chase scenes, but some viewers deem this visual chaos to be a benefit.

For action junkies, it's useful to compare Fast & Furious 6 with something like Dredd or The Raid: Redemption. Those, of course, are real action films with hardcore fight scenes and equally over-the-top excursions into mayhem. The difference is that Dredd and The Raid: Redemption offer a level of excitement and energy that's lacking from Fast & Furious 6. They're visceral. They elevate the pulse. It's all in style and delivery (and undoubtedly the ability to offer R-rated violence has something to do with it). Watching Dredd and The Raid: Redemption, I felt like I was viewing a movie. Watching Fast & Furious 6, I felt like I was watching a video game that would have been more fun if I was playing.
